According to renowned NBA reporter Shams Charania, NBA league officials have met with Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard and his agent, warning them that public statements expressing a preference to only play for the Miami Heat could lead to penalties. Lillard had previously requested a trade, and there were reports that his agent had been cautioning other teams that Lillard would only play for the Heat. In response to this matter, NBA league officials held meetings with Lillard, his agent, and representatives from the players' union, during which they conveyed that any public statements indicating a willingness to be traded to a specific team or to play for a specific team could result in penalties.
Lillard's agent denied having warned other teams, and after an investigation, the league found that the facts aligned largely with the agent's statement. Following this, league officials cautioned Lillard and his agent that if future statements arise expressing a willingness to exclusively play for a certain team, Lillard might face league sanctions. The league also warned the players' union that any player or agent engaging in similar behavior could also be subject to penalties. The NBA has issued a memorandum to all 30 teams in the league regarding this matter. |
