Pant has been out of action since December 2022, when he met with a horrible car crash that left him with multiple injuries, including a torn ligament. He has been posting his recovery updates on social media, showing his determination to get back on the field. The Delhi Capitals are yet to decide if Pant can handle the triple responsibility of being a wicketkeeper-batter and captain. He also has the option of playing only as a batter, using the Impact Player rule. Ponting praised Pant's positive attitude and said he might have to limit his wicketkeeping this season. He also highlighted Pant's leadership skills and how much the team missed him last season. Pant was replaced by Warner as the captain of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2023. The team had a dismal performance, losing their first five matches and finishing ninth in the points table with only five wins out of 14 games. Ponting hoped that Pant would be able to play at least some matches in the IPL 2024 and said they would manage his workload carefully to get the best out of him.
