How is the format of the UEFA European Championship conducted?

In the 2024 UEFA European Championship, there are a total of 24 teams participating in the main tournament, divided into 6 groups. The top two teams from each group, as well as the four best-performing third-placed teams, advance to the knockout stage. The 2024 UEFA European Championship will be held from June to July in 10 cities in Germany (Berlin, Munich, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Cologne, Leipzig, Frankfurt), with the final taking place on July 14, 2024, at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.

The top two teams from each group directly qualify, while the top 4 highest-ranked teams from the UEFA Nations League pots 1, 2, and 3 that did not qualify through the qualifiers will compete in two rounds of playoffs for 3 spots. The host nation Germany qualifies directly for the final tournament.

The top two teams from each group advance directly to the final tournament. In the group stage, teams are ranked based on points. If two or more teams have the same number of points, the following tie-breaking criteria are applied:
a. Points obtained in the matches among the tied teams;
b. Goal difference in the matches among the tied teams;
c. Goals scored in the matches among the tied teams;
d. If two or more teams are still tied after applying criteria a-c, criteria e-i are applied sequentially to determine the final ranking;
e. Goal difference in all group matches;
f. Goals scored in all group matches;
g. Away goals scored in all group matches;
h. Fair play points;
i. UEFA national team coefficient.

The final tournament of the UEFA European Championship begins with the group stage, where the 24 teams are divided into 6 groups of 4 teams each. The top two teams from each group and the four best-performing third-placed teams advance to the round of 16, followed by the knockout stage.

From the quarter-finals to the final, matches are decided by a single-leg format. If the score is tied at the end of 90 minutes, extra time is played, followed by a penalty shootout if the score remains tied after extra time.
