Have you heard? That guy from the Turkish exchange got sentenced to an unusually long prison term. When I first heard the news, it was hard to believe. You know, the cryptocurrency space is already full of drama and surprises, but this takes it to a whole new level.
So, yeah, FTX's SBF got sentenced to 25 years and had $11 billion in assets confiscated. Wow, that's just astronomical! But after hearing this news, some people started sighing, saying that the verdict was too lenient. After all, there's this guy, the founder of a Turkish exchange, who got sentenced to 11,000 years in prison for fraud, and they confiscated billions of dollars in assets. Comparing these, it feels a bit unfair, doesn't it? Yeah, speaking of that Turkish exchange, Thodex, it used to be quite a big deal, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in Turkey. But in April 2021, it suddenly collapsed, and then the founder, Faruk Fatih Ozer, disappeared. It's said that over 400,000 people were involved, losing nearly $2 billion worth of cryptocurrency. Oh, just thinking about it hurts.
Faruk Fatih Ozer fled to Albania, but he was eventually caught. Back in Turkey, it's been a rough ride for him. He's been charged with a slew of crimes, including organized crime, fraud, and money laundering. During the trial, along with his sister and brother, he was sentenced to a whopping 11,000 years in prison plus a hefty fine. Some say the heavy sentence is mainly because he committed over 2027 different crimes, with each defrauded individual counting as a separate offense. Moreover, it's said that during the trial, this guy didn't even think he did anything wrong, and he even told the court that if he really wanted to commit a crime, he wouldn't have been so amateurish about it. |
