The image of Manchester United as a "patsy" is well-known, and a recent ESPN report further highlights this portrayal. Allegedly, when Real Madrid learned that Manchester United wanted to buy Casemiro for €70 million, Real Madrid's top brass burst out laughing and deemed it insane.

Casemiro, a player who has helped Real Madrid win numerous championships, undoubtedly possesses undeniable talent. However, as age advances, a player's competitive form may inevitably decline. Therefore, teams are typically hesitant to spend big money on aging players. Yet, Manchester United seems to be an exception.

Manchester United often portrays themselves as "patsies" in the transfer market, frequently paying above-market transfer fees and player salaries to secure signings. Casemiro is another such transfer case. According to ESPN journalist Rodrigo Faez, when Real Madrid's top executives heard that Manchester United was willing to pay €70 million for Casemiro, they found it unbelievable. Consequently, Real Madrid wasted no time in selling Casemiro to Manchester United, fearing that they might withdraw the offer.

Certainly, Casemiro has performed well at Manchester United, but it's a fact that his competitive form is not at its peak. Considering the future, he is unlikely to maintain his peak performance at Manchester United for another three years. Therefore, the €70 million deal is difficult to qualify as a sound transaction. It is reported that Manchester United's new owner intends to sell Casemiro to rebuild the midfield, hoping that Manchester United will take a serious look and have professionals make selections to avoid similar transactions like Casemiro's. Otherwise, Manchester United will find it difficult to improve.

Young players can still be considered "investments", but older players like Casemiro, whose abilities decline with age, are typically seen as short-term assets. The purchase was aimed at immediate impact, with the expectation that if he could perform well for just two seasons, it would be worth it. However, his performance took a sharp downturn after just one season. Nevertheless, Manchester United's squad now includes more than just one or two players whose market value has plummeted.

Hopefully, Casemiro can justify his price tag and perform well in the upcoming seasons.

Manchester United's move for Casemiro does seem like a desperate attempt, but given their financial prowess in the football world, they can afford such moves. Spending €70 million on a 30-year-old midfielder might seem irrational, but for United, Casemiro's presence could be seen as a technical upgrade. Despite his age, Casemiro brings a wealth of experience from winning numerous titles with Real Madrid, displaying a champion's mentality. In his first season at United, he showed qualities that their current crop of players lacked. However, labeling Casemiro's transfer as a failure stems from a few reasons. Firstly, his age suggests a decline in performance, especially for a defensive midfielder. Secondly, he hasn't helped United secure any significant trophies during his tenure. Therefore, many view United's acquisition of Casemiro as a misstep. Yet, acquiring a player of Casemiro's caliber, a key figure in Real Madrid's Champions League success, demands considerable investment. Had Casemiro been a couple of years younger, United would have had to pay even more, possibly around €100 million. It seems United might have bought Casemiro at the wrong time. It's likely that this summer, he will seek opportunities elsewhere to continue his career. As a defensive midfielder, Casemiro may struggle to keep up with the pace of the Premier League.

It's true that player transfer fees used to be exorbitant. Perhaps the current economic climate has caused financial strains on clubs, leading them to swiftly offload players acquired at high prices to salvage their financial situation. Casemiro's value seems inflated, and personally, I doubt he merits such a high price tag. I suspect there might be something fishy going on behind the scenes. I suggest relevant authorities investigate thoroughly to see if there are any shady deals like undisclosed contracts involved. Manchester United is in dire need of funds right now. They can't even achieve decent results with a compass, let alone with these high-earning players. It's disheartening, there seems to be little hope. Hopefully, Manchester United will improve. Come on!

Manchester United certainly has money to spend, and perhaps they believe Casemiro is worth the price. Casemiro will need to repay Manchester United's faith in him!
