Can football really come home? The England national football team, which always chants "football's coming home," finally had their opening match of this year's European Championship a few days ago. Despite starting with a win, England's performance continues to draw criticism from many. So, how did they actually perform? Let's take a look.
This edition of England boasts one of the most luxurious squads in the Euros, which also earns them the largest fan support. After all, England's last major tournament victory was back in 1966, a staggering 68 years ago. Hence, every time England participates in a major tournament, they chant "football's coming home," hoping their dream will come true.
The most promising opportunity was four years ago at the European Championship when England reached the final. Unfortunately, they lost to Italy in the penalty shootout, missing out on the title. Learning from that experience, England certainly aims to go further and win the European Championship this year. However, judging from their first match, England's performance was hardly convincing. Despite winning the match by a one-goal margin, their display didn't seem to persuade England fans that their team has what it takes to win the tournament.
England's first opponent, Serbia, was considered weaker, yet the England team managed only five shots throughout the game. In the second half, England even found themselves under siege by Serbia, which is unacceptable for a team boasting numerous star players. England's manager, Southgate, also faced heavy criticism during this time. It can be said that if the England team wants to bring football home, they still have a lot of effort to put in. |
