"When you have a €200 million contract waiting on your desk to be signed, would you hesitate to accept it? For most people, this would be an irresistible temptation. However, Luka Modrić dared to refuse, not once but multiple times, the lucrative contracts offered by Saudi Arabian teams. He did so simply because of his deep gratitude and love for Real Madrid.
Saudi teams repeatedly offered him significant contracts, each one more lucrative than the last. The contracts ranged from an initial annual salary of €50 million, to a two-year deal worth €100 million plus a €20 million signing bonus, and finally, a massive three-year contract worth €200 million. Despite these staggering offers, Modrić remained unwavering in his loyalty to Real Madrid, as he wished to continue playing for the club that had treated him so well.
Modrić's desire to stay at Real Madrid is rooted in several reasons. Firstly, Real Madrid's midfield has been undergoing a rejuvenation with the arrivals of talented young players like Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde, and Toni Kroos. As midfield is a position that values experience, Modrić feels that he can contribute by guiding and mentoring these younger talents. After more than a decade with Real Madrid since joining in 2012, he also feels a strong connection to the club and wants to repay the faith they have shown in him.
Moreover, Modrić has always thrived in high-level competitions, and he has expressed his desire to continue playing as long as he can. Ideally, he hopes to retire at Real Madrid, a rare achievement for a player.
With Modrić confirmed to stay for the new season, Real Madrid will be hoping that his experience and skill can help the team reclaim the trophies they missed out on in the previous season, as they aim for success on multiple fronts." |
