In recent years, the transfer fees of football superstars have risen dramatically, with many of them surpassing the €100 million mark. Some of these players' values were unthinkable in the past. To understand why this surge in player values occurred, we need to look back to the year 2018.
As seen in the list above, the majority of players on the list had their values increase significantly after 2018. Before 2018, the rise in player values was not as pronounced.
Players like Vinicius Jr. of Real Madrid, Sancho of Manchester United, and Saka of Arsenal, while undoubtedly talented, might have found it challenging to surpass the €100 million mark if we transported them back to 2018. So, why did football superstar transfer values experience such a surge after 2018? The primary reason can be traced back to Paris Saint-Germain's unprecedented €222 million transfer of Neymar from Barcelona in 2017. This landmark transfer set a new standard for player valuations and marked the beginning of an era of inflated transfer fees. The peak of this trend was witnessed in 2018 and 2019, and it has since continued at a high level.
However, the current situation indicates a gradual return to rationality in the transfer market. Wealthy clubs like Manchester City have pursued more sensible transfer strategies, no longer inflating player prices to unreasonable levels. Therefore, the surge in player transfer values has slowed down, though it may never return to the levels seen before.
Even the big-spending clubs don't want to see the market continue to inflate irrationally. So, the moderation in player transfer values is generally seen as a positive development. It remains to be seen how long this trend can be sustained. |
