With Messi and Ronaldo having moved to the United States and Saudi Arabia, the iconic duo of the past has officially become a part of a generation's youth. Looking at the entire football landscape, it can be said that we are now entering the post-Messi and Ronaldo era. However, there's a question that arises: Are Haaland and Mbappé truly capable of assuming the mantle of the new iconic duo, or is football entering an era of multiple stars shining brightly, with these two players having their time at the pinnacle?
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi undoubtedly symbolize the youth of a generation. The "Messi-Ronaldo era" is unquestionably legendary, the kind of legend that will still be discussed decades from now. Currently, although the new generation led by Mbappé and Haaland is gradually making their mark, in terms of influence, they have yet to match Messi and Ronaldo. Nevertheless, it's undeniable that the media is actively trying to shape Mbappé and Haaland as the new iconic duo.
First, let's talk about Haaland. After joining Manchester City and helping them secure a treble, including the Champions League, league title, and FA Cup, he received the Golden Boot in all three competitions. His star is shining brightly, and this year's Ballon d'Or voting even momentarily placed him ahead of Mbappé. At present, due to the higher exposure of the Premier League and Haaland's Champions League triumph, which Mbappé hasn't achieved, from a club perspective, Haaland has outperformed Mbappé.
However, at the national team level, Mbappé decisively surpasses Haaland. Haaland represents the Norwegian national team, which is relatively weaker in terms of strength. In contrast, Mbappé plays for the French national team, one of the powerhouses in football, and has led them to win a World Cup and a European Championship. Therefore, in this regard, Haaland is unlikely to catch up with Mbappé.
Both players have their strengths and weaknesses in terms of club and national team honors. But creating another Messi-Ronaldo era is no easy task. Currently, Mbappé and Haaland are in different leagues, and their chances of facing each other are limited. During the Messi and Ronaldo era, when Cristiano Ronaldo was at Real Madrid and Lionel Messi at Barcelona, their encounters were frequent and headline-grabbing. Moreover, their consistent performance over more than a decade eventually made them legends.
Mbappé and Haaland have had an excellent season, but who can guarantee that they will maintain consistent performance for over a decade? After all, injuries are a significant potential hazard, and players often struggle to regain their form after returning from injury. Therefore, becoming the next Messi and Ronaldo truly requires the right timing, circumstances, and individuals. |
