"Baccarat is a card game that originated in Italy and was introduced to France in the 15th century. It became popular in various countries, including England and France, in the 19th century. Today, it is one of the most common table games in casinos around the world.
What is Baccarat?
Baccarat evolved from the Italian word ""baccarà,"" which means ""zero,"" signifying that the game starts from zero. Baccarat is widely popular among gamblers worldwide, especially in Macau, where it boasts the highest number of Baccarat tables in the world.
How to Play Baccarat
Unlike other table games, Baccarat has a unique feature where bets are placed after the cards are dealt. Players can choose to bet on either the ""Banker"" or the ""Player"" after the dealer has dealt the cards. The results are then revealed by the dealer, adding an element of fairness to the game. In each round, the dealer follows Baccarat rules to deal two cards to the ""Banker"" and ""Player."" The cards are dealt face down, with the ""Player"" receiving the first card, followed by the ""Banker."" If a clear winner is not determined, a third card may be drawn.
Each side can have a maximum of three cards, and the goal is to have a total of 9 points or the closest to 9 points without exceeding it. If the point totals are the same, it results in a tie. If only one card is drawn in the first round, the remaining cards will serve as the first card for the next round. This continues with six cards in total on the table for each new round.
Baccarat Game Rules
Baccarat is typically played with 6 to 12 decks of cards, with each deck containing 52 cards, for a total of 312 to 624 cards. The face cards (Kings, Queens, Jacks) and 10s are worth 0 points, while the other cards have values equal to their numbers (e.g., 2 is worth 2 points, 3 is worth 3 points). An Ace is worth 1 point. When calculating the total points for a hand, only the last digit of the sum is considered. Therefore, the maximum point total is 9, and the minimum is 0.
There is no strict limit on the number of players who can bet on a Baccarat game. The casino typically provides seating for 9 or 14 players at the table, but standing players can also join in. However, players should be mindful of the betting limits before participating. After shuffling, stacking, and cutting the cards, one player at the table is designated to cut the cards. A red card is provided, which is then inserted into the deck at least one-third of the way from the end. The entire deck is placed in a transparent shoe with all cards facing down. In Macau casinos, there is an unofficial rule that allows the players who bet the highest amounts on either side to have the option to view the cards. If you are the highest bettor but choose not to view the cards, you can leave that opportunity to the second-highest bettor.
Calculating Baccarat Points
For cards numbered 2 to 9, the point value is equal to the number on the card. For example, a 2 of hearts is worth 2 points, a 3 of spades is worth 3 points, and so on. Aces count as 1 point. Face cards (Kings, Queens, Jacks) and 10s are worth 0 points and are considered ""10-point"" cards. When adding up the point values of two cards, only the last digit of the total is used. For instance, if you have a 7 and an 8, the total is 15, but in Baccarat, it's considered as 5 points.
Baccarat Card Drawing Rules
When one side has a total point value of 8 or 9 from the first two cards, it's considered a ""natural win,"" and no additional cards are drawn. The side with the natural win is declared the winner, and the round ends. However, if neither side has a natural win, additional cards may be drawn. The drawing rules are as follows:
- If the player's total point value is 5 or less, they draw an additional card.
- If the player's total point value is 6 or 7, they do not draw another card (they stand).
- The banker's actions depend on the player's hand and whether the player drew a third card. The banker will draw or stand according to specific rules that are pre-determined.
Baccarat Insurance Betting
Baccarat features a unique insurance mechanism. In each game, both the banker and the player have two opportunities to trigger insurance bets based on certain conditions and the total point value of their hands. The odds for insurance bets depend on the total point value of the banker's or player's hand at the moment the insurance condition is met. If two identical insurance bets are triggered in the same game, a player can only place one bet.
