The Warriors have won four championships in just eight years since their first championship in 2015. Fans have been discussing the team's glory during the two consecutive championship years when they seemed unbeatable.
For a team, what's more important: a single dominant player or the winning culture and collective effort established by the entire team?
This question seems particularly fitting when discussing the relationship between Durant and the Warriors. Over the years, there has been ongoing debate about whether Durant was the key factor behind the Warriors' dynasty.
Different opinions in the American media on where the dynasty came from
Around May of last year, prominent American sports commentator A- Smith discussed Durant and Curry in a blog post, stating, "When these two were teammates on the Warriors, even their mothers knew Durant was the better player."
Whenever Durant and Curry are mentioned, A- Smith tends to emphasize Durant's importance. He has repeatedly said, "I will never deny the achievements of the Warriors and Curry's performance on the court. But you need to understand that without Durant, what do the Warriors have to counter LeBron? Remember, in 2015, the Cavaliers lost Love and Irving to injuries in succession."
However, A- Smith's views are not universally accepted. For example, during last year's NBA Finals, the American media StatMuse publicly compared Curry's stats against the Celtics with Durant's stats against the Celtics.
Shaquille O'Neal, the NBA legend, has also been generous in his praise of Curry. Regarding the comparison between Durant and Curry, he has repeatedly emphasized, "You need to know that Curry and Durant defeated LeBron together. Curry has beaten LeBron, and similarly, Curry has beaten Durant. There's no doubt about Curry's greatness."
But when it comes to the topic of the Warriors' dynasty, the mainstream view does not lean towards Durant. Durant appears more like a "super mercenary" who made the already strong Warriors look even more formidable.
In the end, did they mutually contribute to each other's success? Or was Durant merely the icing on the cake? |
