Media has compiled a list of the total transfer gains and losses of top European clubs over the past decade. Unsurprisingly, the teams that incurred the highest losses are primarily from the English Premier League. Let me break it down for you.

First, let's take a look at the profit rankings. We all know that football is an expensive sport, and top clubs often have to spend substantial amounts to remain competitive and aim for championships. However, some clubs specialize in buying and selling potential star players. In this list, only five top clubs have made profits in the transfer market. They are Benfica (+€531.3 million), Porto (+€367.7 million), Ajax (+€300.8 million), and Borussia Dortmund (+€70.7 million).

The top three profit-makers, Benfica, Porto, and Ajax, are considered the three biggest black markets in Europe. They produce players who sometimes shine and sometimes falter, but their common characteristic is their high price. Many top clubs have ended up paying more than they should when doing business with them. Every time they see one of their players producing impressive stats, other top clubs can't resist reaching for their wallets and willingly pay up.

In the remaining part of this ranking, from 5th to 18th place, several clubs have multiple entries. Real Madrid has the highest return on investment. Real Madrid had a net spending of -€182.7 million in the past. In other words, they spent less than €200 million on transfers and won 5 UEFA Champions League titles and 4 La Liga titles, undoubtedly making them the big winners.

On the contrary, the biggest loser on the list is probably the last-placed Manchester United. Manchester United had a net spending of -€1.000.2 billion but only won one Premier League title, one UEFA Europa League title, one League Cup, and one FA Cup. These achievements are far from justifying such a substantial investment. The main reason is that Manchester United consistently overpaid for players, leading to the accumulation of such an exaggerated figure. Of course, there are other clubs on the list, but I won't go into detail about each one.

Indeed, the true money-making strategy in football is developing players, building their reputation, and then selling them for profit. These clubs prioritize financial gains over on-field success, and it seems to be a successful approach in the modern football business.

The positioning of second-tier European clubs is quite clear. They search worldwide for talent, develop it, and then sell it to the wealthy clubs. In fact, they know they can't retain these players, as talented individuals recognize their own worth. That's the reasoning behind it!

In the workplace, there's a saying: "Don't challenge someone's expertise with your hobbies!" We may be passionate fans, but those elite clubs are real businesses. Behind the scenes, there are professional teams calculating the value of players. They are the true experts in the field.

I didn't know there was this kind of operation. I thought teams focused on training and nurturing players to make the team shine. So, there's actually a business of selling players to make money?
