In December 2022, Bitcoin developer Casey Rodarmor released open-source software called ORD that runs on the Bitcoin Core full node. In essence, this software allows users to input any information, such as a piece of text or an image, onto the Bitcoin blockchain. Subsequently, this uploaded information is tied to a specific sat (satoshi, the smallest unit of Bitcoin), resulting in a sat with certain information, commonly referred to as a Bitcoin NFT. To be clearer, the Ordinals protocol consists of two main components: Ordinals and Inscription.

Ordinals essentially provide a scheme for numbering the smallest unit of Bitcoin, sats (1 BTC = 100,000,000 sats), allowing for the tracking and transfer of individual sats. Here, sats are numbered based on their mining sequence and are transferred from transaction inputs to transaction outputs in a first-in, first-out manner. Once each sat is assigned a number, a piece of content can be written into the "Segregated Witness area" of the transaction. This written content becomes associated with the first sat of the transaction output. The process of writing this information is called "inscribe," and the content written is referred to as "Inscription."
