If asked about the top team in La Liga, most people would immediately think of Real Madrid and Barcelona, and perhaps a few more traditional strong teams like Atletico Madrid and Sevilla. However, no one would expect that the current leader is an entirely unfamiliar team – Girona.
I believe many football fans may have rarely heard of them; only avid followers like myself are familiar. I remember last summer when I placed a bet on Girona's promotion to La Liga, and I even went to watch their playoff match. Finally, my wish came true. Overall, it's a team whose potential in La Liga is uncertain, often described as the top of Segunda Division but the bottom of La Liga.
After promotion last season, Girona secured a respectable 10th place in the league, not overly impressive but quite commendable. This season, they have been on the rise, defeating Barcelona a few days ago and claiming the top spot with 41 points, leading second-placed Real Madrid by 2 points and leaving Atletico Madrid and Barcelona trailing by 7 points. It's been a thrilling experience for those of us who stayed up late to watch the games! Simultaneously, bookmakers immediately adjusted their championship odds, with Girona surpassing Atletico Madrid and now only trailing behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.
If Aston Villa was a surprise package, Girona is currently breaking through the sky. The credit for their success lies in Girona's strong attacking prowess, scoring 38 goals in 16 matches – a more efficient rate than the self-proclaimed 'Galacticos' Real Madrid, making them a force to be reckoned with in La Liga.
However, there are still two questions to answer regarding whether Girona can clinch their first La Liga title:
1. Being a smaller club, the squad depth is limited. As injuries may increase in the later stages of the league, the ability to maintain a high-scoring momentum remains uncertain.
2. Can they overcome Real Madrid? In 16 league matches, they scored in almost every game except one – against Real Madrid, where they not only failed to score but also conceded three goals. If the points remain tight later in the season, the match against Real Madrid could likely decide the ultimate title holder. |
