On December 11th, recently, NBA player Austin Rivers discussed LeBron James, the forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, in his personal podcast.
"I saw Kendrick Perkins say something interesting, 'We are still relying on LeBron to be the face of the league, and he's 38, because we don't have any other options.' Jokic doesn't want to, his playing style and star power are not enough to attract widespread fan attention. He appears on TV many times, but there are some things that LeBron, Michael (Jordan), and Kobe (Bryant) can do, that amazing element, those dunks, those ball-handling moves, that agility, everything that draws people in. We have good players; Jason Tatum is excellent, Luka (Doncic) is excellent, Devin Booker is excellent.
"But do we have a once-in-a-lifetime genius player who can change the NBA as soon as they enter? We don't. I think people are starting to realize how lucky we were before. We had Michael, when Michael ended, we had Kobe, and then we had LeBron. We had three consecutive face-of-the-league players. Honestly, we have one or two players approaching that level, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, they are also generational talents. These guys are now old but still dominating the game because they are outstanding. But we don't have this new group of young players, I'm not saying they can't, it just feels different.
"Do you know what Tatum needs to do? They need to win a championship. When Tatum wins a ring, the situation will start to look different. If Luka wins a ring, it will also look different. If Zion (Williamson) can win a ring, it will also look different. It can't be Stephen, LeBron, and those guys continuing to win rings and compete for championships; those guys are 36, 37 years old, we need other people to step up." Rivers said. |
