Gambling has a long history, and over the years, how many gamblers have contributed to shaping modern society? The individual we're discussing today is not only a gambler but also an encyclopedic scholar, mathematician, physicist, astrologer, philosopher, and the founder of classical probability theory. However, he did something quite extraordinary—using astrology to predict his own time of death, and to prove his prediction accurate, he chose to end his life. His name is Gerolamo Cardano.
Gerolamo Cardano was born in 1501 in Italy and faced discrimination due to being born out of wedlock. Fortunately, his father loved him dearly, and his father, a lawyer well-versed in law and classical literature, guided Cardano in learning classical literature, mathematics, and other subjects from an early age. According to his father's wishes, Cardano was supposed to study law and become a lawyer when he grew up. However, Cardano developed a keen interest in medicine and insisted on studying it when applying to university, leading to irreconcilable conflicts between father and son. After a standoff, his father decided to impose economic sanctions on his son. Cardano, who had been living comfortably with his father's support, found himself in dire straits due to his father's financial blockade. To resolve this issue, he identified a lucrative opportunity through astrological dice casting – the result being the world of gambling. Thus, Cardano began relying on gambling to sustain his university life, and gambling became an addiction he never managed to overcome throughout his life. |
