When we talk about countries associated with gambling, we often think of countries like Las Vegas, but rarely do we think of Monaco, the second smallest country in the world. Do you know how Monaco, despite its small size, became wealthy? It's through gambling! Monaco, though small like a sparrow, is one of the most concentrated areas of wealth in the world. Describing this country as "small but well-equipped" is quite appropriate.
Now, why is Monaco's territory so small? We have to go back to 1861 when Monaco signed a series of unequal agreements with France. In order to gain independent status, Monaco ceded 11/12 of its territory to France. France argued that the remaining land was not enough to establish a country, believing that Monaco would eventually return the last 1/10 of the land. Thus, the agreement was signed, leaving Monaco with less than 1/10 of its original territory.
After losing most of its land, Monaco basically lost all its sources of income. Just when Monaco was on the brink of bankruptcy, the Monaco royal family came up with a brilliant idea: opening a casino. At that time, gambling was legislatively prohibited in European countries. Therefore, with the opportunity at hand, Monaco gathered national resources and built a casino. This turned out to be a case of unexpected success. After the casino was built, they turned their fortunes around and became rich almost overnight. By using poison to counteract poison, they achieved an outcome beyond their expectations. With the casino attracting gamblers, the hotel, restaurant, and tourism industries flourished, drawing many wealthy Europeans to Monaco. Monaco instantly became the most densely populated country in Europe. Here, the saying "on the brink of bankruptcy, saved by gambling" is indeed fitting.
Today, Monaco's main industries, apart from its famous gambling industry, include tourism and banking, both highly lucrative sectors. Monaco boasts the world-famous Monte Carlo Casino, the luxurious palace, and hotels, making it a paradise for every gambler. If you have the chance, it's worth visiting Monaco to witness the breathtaking scenery of a country that rose from the ashes thanks to the gambling industry.
