The 36-year-old intended to wear shoes bearing the phrases "Freedom is a human right" and "All lives are equal" during the first Test in Perth, but the ICC threatened to ban him if he did. Usman did, however, wear a black armband during the game, which prompted an ICC warning. The southpaw denied the claim made by the governing body, stating that it was due to a personal loss.
