The match ended in a loss for India, but not before the visitors controlled much of the game until Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow gave them a rough introduction to Bazball by slamming unbeaten hundreds in a 269-run stand that required just 316 balls. In addition to taking five wickets in that game, Bumrah hit an unbeaten 31 in the first 16 balls of the Indian innings. He surpassed West Indies great Brian Lara for the most runs scored by a batter in a single over of a Test match when he scored 29 of those runs in an over off Stuart Broad. In that over, Broad gave up the most runs ever in the history of the format—35 runs in total.
