"Although today's fans often say that the NBA has become a place where various superstars pad their stats due to stylistic changes, the current generation of stars is indeed much more aggressive in chasing statistics, which has led to numerous records being broken. However, not every situation is suitable for stat-padding. For instance, Giannis' attempt to pad his stats during garbage time in a game against the Wizards was personally overturned by the NBA officials, leaving Giannis embarrassed for a while.
Let's start by explaining why some of Giannis' stats were canceled by the referees during the game against the Wizards. Achieving a triple-double is a significant accomplishment in terms of statistics, indicating that a player had a strong performance in the game. Naturally, Giannis also wanted to achieve this milestone, so he tried a clever move.
On March 5th, in the final three seconds of the Bucks' game against the Wizards, both teams had given up on offense and defense, waiting for the time to run out. At that moment, Giannis' stats were 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 10 assists, lacking just one rebound to complete the triple-double. With the ball in his hands, Giannis intentionally tossed the ball to the side of the rim under the Wizards' basket and then retrieved it. This action would count as a rebound, and Giannis easily secured the triple-double.
However, things cannot always go so smoothly. It was evident that Giannis' actions were suspiciously aimed at padding his stats, and despite this rebound being counted during the game, the NBA officials announced the next day that they were overturning the last rebound. According to league rules, a player's shot must have an intent to score, or else the attempt will not be counted as a shot. Therefore, Giannis' final stat line was adjusted to 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 10 assists, no longer constituting a triple-double." |
