After Argentina won the World Cup, many of my friends suddenly posted congratulations to Messi, saying that he had finally become the best player in the world. I was a bit surprised because these friends don't usually follow football, and they might not even know much about Messi's specific experiences. It seemed like they had only watched one World Cup final, and suddenly, everyone had become Messi fans.
As I thought about this situation, it dawned on me: this is the influence of the World Cup. As the most famous sporting event in the world, the World Cup has unparalleled influence. It touches such a wide range of people that even those who don't typically follow football become interested in it.
So, I came to appreciate the famous saying in the football world: "You're not truly the best if you haven't won a World Cup." Football enthusiasts know that the level of competition in the World Cup might not be as high as in club matches. Some may question why players like Messi and Ronaldo, who have broken numerous records at the club level, are not automatically considered the best.
It wasn't until I saw many of my non-football-watching friends congratulating Messi that I realized the title of "the best player" needs widespread recognition from the public. Compared to club competitions, the World Cup undoubtedly has a larger impact. Winning the World Cup is what truly cements a player's name in the annals of football history, thanks to its enormous influence.
