PSG: Nouveau riche, dubious taste.

I view the term ""nouveau riche"" applied to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in a completely negative light. It implies being wealthy but lacking class, morals, and self-awareness. My reason for saying this about PSG primarily stems from their handling of the Kylian Mbappé situation, as PSG has been making poor decisions since last year.

It was the first time I saw an internationally renowned football club stoop so low as to give a player unprecedented control and a sky-high salary to convince him to stay. Such a practice of allowing a player to overshadow the entire team is something I've only seen PSG do in all my years of watching football. Moreover, they even had the French president intervene to persuade Mbappé to stay, which was truly unprecedented.

After that incident last year, I knew that even if Mbappé stayed, it would lead to chaos after a year if they didn't achieve results. Now, it has indeed exploded. PSG's antics don't stop there. After their humiliating loss to Real Madrid last year, the club's chairman, who represents the face of PSG, couldn't handle defeat gracefully. He threatened individuals at Real Madrid, which was incredibly unprofessional.

This year, when Mbappé announced he wouldn't renew his contract, most clubs would privately negotiate with the player if they wanted to extend his contract. But PSG's chairman took it upon himself to publicly threaten Mbappé, stating that if he didn't renew, he would be sold. No one should be above the players in such matters.

I've only seen one club conduct itself in this manner, airing its conflicts so openly, and that's PSG. I've always believed that what attracts fans to football clubs, apart from results, is whether they identify with the club's values and actions. If they do, it creates a sense of belonging because fans support a club based on its values. This is what enables a team to withstand adversity.
