Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar criticized those suggesting that India had planned to intentionally perform poorly in their Asia Cup Super 4 match against Pakistan. Akhtar revealed that he had received messages and calls claiming that "India had rigged the game" and were "intentionally losing (against Sri Lanka) to eliminate Pakistan" from the Asia Cup. After India defeated Pakistan by a massive 228-run margin, Pakistan needed India to win against Sri Lanka in their next Super 4 match to improve their chances of reaching the final. However, India faced stiff competition from Sri Lanka, largely due to the outstanding all-round performance of 20-year-old Dunith Wellalage.
Akhtar commended Wellalage's genuine efforts and emphasized that India's performance had nothing to do with intentionally underperforming. He expressed his frustration, saying, "I don't understand what some people are thinking. I'm receiving memes and messages claiming 'India fixed the game' and that they were deliberately losing to eliminate Pakistan. Seriously? Sri Lanka played their hearts out. Wellalalge and Asalanka gave their all. Did you see that 20-year-old kid? He scored 43 runs and took 5 wickets. I'm receiving phone calls from India and other countries, alleging that India deliberately lost.
