Spending the most money yet struggling to win titles? A recent report from CIES (Swiss-based sports research organization CIES Football Observatory) reveals the costs incurred by all teams in building their squads, with Manchester United and Chelsea topping the list in terms of expenditure. However, despite their hefty investments, both teams have had a disappointing start to the new season, failing to live up to their financial outlay.

In this ranking, Chelsea, owned by American billionaire Roman Abramovich, was widely expected to be at the top, as they have indeed spent more than any other team in the past two years, not hesitating to open their wallets. However, surprisingly, Manchester United currently holds the top spot for spending the most money. Manchester United's squad has cost the club £991.7 million, surpassing Chelsea's £977.9 million. Despite the significant financial investments, both teams have yet to secure important titles, and their performances in the new Premier League season have been lackluster. As of now, Manchester United is ranked thirteenth, while Chelsea is fourteenth in the league table, and it's only been five rounds into the season. Their chances of winning the Premier League this season are slim.

The rest of the teams fall into a more expected pattern. Manchester City ranks third with £898.5 million, followed by Paris Saint-Germain (£862.3 million), Arsenal (£720.9 million), Tottenham Hotspur (£714.9 million), and Liverpool (£664 million). These teams' investments have proven to be commensurate with their performance. Currently, Paris Saint-Germain remains a favorite for the Ligue 1 title, while Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool are all part of the Premier League's top contenders. Among them, Manchester City's investment has certainly yielded significant returns, with multiple Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy to their name.

Looking at the complete list, the Premier League has 19 teams, Serie A has 15, La Liga has 12, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga both have 11, and the Saudi league has 4 teams. The Premier League undoubtedly stands out as the top football league in terms of spending. The Saudi league has emerged as a rising force, while Serie A, La Liga, Ligue 1, and the Bundesliga continue to be consistent contributors. It's clear that the top five European leagues are the epicenter of world football.
