Spinners will play a significant role in the first half of the ICC World Cup. The absence of an off-spinner, particularly R Ashwin, was a topic of discussion when India announced their squad for the tournament. However, with Axar Patel's injury, the 37-year-old Ashwin was included in the ongoing series against Australia and performed admirably, securing four wickets across the first two games.
Kiran More, former India cricketer and chairman of selectors, emphasized the value of Ashwin's experience at the marquee event. With Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja already in contention, More believed that an off-spinner would add the variety needed in the bowling attack.
"Both Axar and Ashwin are very talented, but considering the abundance of left-handed batsmen in other countries' lineups, having an off-spinner in the side becomes crucial," explained More. "While I'm uncertain about pitch conditions throughout the tournament, I anticipate the ball gripping a bit after the monsoon season, making spinners pivotal in the World Cup's initial stages."
Captain Rohit Sharma has highlighted the importance of a lengthy batting lineup, with Shardul Thakur consistently making the playing XI as a fast-bowling all-rounder. However, considering the fluctuating performances of Shardul, the team might be inclined to opt for another spin-bowling all-rounder.
"Ashwin and Axar can contribute with the bat and provide balance as all-rounders," noted More. "Either of them could potentially replace Shardul. In truth, if you can't put up a good score with seven batters, it's challenging to win a match. So, if the conditions favor spin, we may need to field three spinners."
This World Cup holds special significance for Rohit, as he missed India's victorious 2011 campaign. Now as captain, the tournament returning to India provides a substantial opportunity for the 36-year-old to secure the coveted trophy. Despite India grappling with injuries to key players in the past year, their victories in the Asia Cup and Australia series indicate that things are falling into place.
"Rohit is exceptionally courageous and adept at handling youngsters," praised More. "He allows his players the freedom to express themselves, placing tremendous trust in them. For instance, backing Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul through thick and thin must have been a joint decision by the captain and coach. They deserve credit for it, given how well these two players are performing now. While other captains might have panicked with the injury situation, Rohit remained composed."
Hardik is set to be the team's biggest asset," declared More. "His bowling, in terms of pace and variations, is now comparable to the likes of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah. His development of a subtle slower ball and in-swing delivery is noteworthy. His dismissal of Babar Azam in the Asia Cup was exceptional. He currently delivers the best bowling lines in Indian cricket. He provides the ideal balance to the team, allowing the captain to relax. Hardik takes wickets, excels as a fielder, finishes games with the bat, and motivates his teammates. He checks all the boxes. He may have a bit of swagger, but every team needs charismatic characters like him.
