General Pre-Flop Recommendations:
In most cases, you should raise/re-raise when holding high-value pairs (AA-QQ) and strong connectors (AK, AQ) to make players with low-value pairs and various connectors pay to see the flop. Remember, if your opponents have good hands, they often have the opportunity to raise further (although many beginners do not realize this and fold too much pre-flop).
Maintain the best possible starting hand (refer to the required minimum point chart). In no-limit poker, if you hold the second-best hand but are closely followed, you will pay a heavy price.
Keep most of your raises in the 70% to 100% range (typically, a bet three times the big blind is roughly 80% of the pot), to save your chips when better hands decide to raise or call. If you have players calling ahead of you, raise 4 to 6 times the big blind.
Be cautious of strong tight players (e.g., if a strong player in an early position raises, you should fold when holding AQ). If very weak players enter the game, call along with them into the flop. Essentially, all other starting hands are calling hands. While you may re-raise with these hands to defend your blinds, you may also raise when you are the first to act from a later position. Mix up your play often by raising, calling, or re-raising with hands you typically wouldn't play. It's best to avoid making your actions too predictable.
How to Adjust Your Play Based on Previous Players' Actions:
If there are two or three callers in front of you and you don't have one of the best hands, such as AK and AA-JJ, consider not raising and simply calling with marginal hands since they perform well in multi-way pots.
If someone raises, consider the raiser's situation and decide whether to call, re-raise, or fold. If it's a strong player, re-raise/fold. If it's a weak player, you should consider calling, as you have a chance to win a large pot if you hit a big hand on the flop. When holding AK and AA-JJ, use the re-raise tactic against strong players with the goal of forcing them out and taking down the pot immediately; otherwise, fold. With pairs, AK, and AQ, if you have a good position, you're likely to engage in a one-on-one battle. When a weaker player raises, you should consider calling, or re-raising if the position allows. The purpose of this approach is to trap them post-flop, rather than driving them out pre-flop.
Calling or Raising:
Raise with AA-QQ, AK, and AQs from any position.
In general, all other starting hands are calling hands. While you may re-raise with these hands to defend your blinds, you may also raise when you are the first to act from a later position." |
