I watched a movie the other day, and there was a line that left a deep impression on me: "Learning to trust people is a costly investment." In our lives, we constantly have to learn to "trust people" in various aspects, whether it's in our careers, business, friendships, family, or relationships. I believe that building trust is a mutual effort, and it's a fundamental part of establishing relationships.

Why is "trusting people" considered a costly investment? In interpersonal relationships, trust is the cornerstone of building connections. However, trusting others requires not only courage but also time and effort. In the context of work, trust between colleagues or partners is the foundation of collaboration and mutual success. When both parties trust each other, they are more willing to work together, solve problems, and create new opportunities.

In the realm of emotions, trust is equally crucial. In any relationship, trust is essential for harmonious coexistence. At the beginning of a relationship, trust may not be very deep as both parties are getting to know each other. Misunderstandings can arise, and this is where trust becomes vital. I firmly believe that building trust takes time, open communication, and gradually developing trust between one another.

Here are some methods that can help us build trust with others:

Fulfill Promises: If you promise to do something, make sure to follow through on your commitments. Keeping promises is a significant way to demonstrate your trustworthiness.

Respect Others: Respect others' opinions, rights, and feelings. Avoid belittling or dismissing their viewpoints.

Consistency: Maintain consistency in your actions and words, avoiding contradictions. Consistency shows that your behavior is predictable and less likely to change.

Listen and Understand: Actively listen to others and try to genuinely understand their needs and feelings. Providing emotional support helps build closeness and trust.

Learn to Forgive: When others make mistakes, consider forgiveness and working together to solve problems. Tolerance and forgiveness help maintain trust.

Keep Secrets: If others share private information or secrets with you, ensure that you don't disclose this information. Respecting others' privacy is a crucial element in building trust.

Adhere to Ethical Principles: Abide by ethical standards in your behavior and decision-making, which helps others believe in your values and principles.

Trust takes time to establish, and it may not be static; it requires maintenance. At times, trust may face challenges or breaches, but through these methods, you can increase the likelihood of building and maintaining trust. Most importantly, trust is a two-way process that requires effort and commitment from both parties. While learning to trust others, there may also be times of disappointment. This is why "learning to trust people is a costly investment." However, once trust is established between both parties, life becomes happier and smoother.

Trusting people comes with a high opportunity cost. If you trust the right person too much, you'll gain a lifelong confidant. If you trust the wrong person too much, you'll gain a lifelong lesson.
