Within one year, the SEC has issued fines totaling nearly $5 billion to the cryptocurrency and related industries.

The U.S. SEC announced on Tuesday that during the fiscal year 2023 (October 2022 to September 2023), it had filed lawsuits against several Wall Street brokerages and cryptocurrency industry giants. These enforcement actions collectively resulted in fines of approximately $5 billion, with the sanctioned entities also required to reimburse losses to investors.

This marks the second-highest total amount of fines in its history for a series of enforcement actions. The SEC stated that the cases it focused on involved digital asset securities, cybersecurity, and misconduct by Wall Street brokerage employees using unauthorized communication platforms to conduct business.

Is the SEC trying to make money in this industry?
