"What is blockchain best at? It is a distributed, trustworthy ledger that cannot be tampered with and has traceability. Just like in the construction industry, where multiple parties cannot trust each other throughout the process, that's when it comes into play," said Anagnost.
Anagnost stated that Autodesk has been dedicated to developing its own "non-blockchain digital custody system" as a step towards improving trust in the construction industry.
He added, "Let's face it, corruption in the construction industry is not uncommon. When people spend hundreds of millions of dollars on large projects, something not quite right is bound to happen. There will always be someone causing resources or funds to be lost in some inappropriate way."
In fact, Anagnost believes that one of the biggest obstacles to enhancing traceability and accountability in construction is those who "don't want to be tracked." He mentioned that people working in the construction industry actually don't want to be explicitly recorded for "who did what, when, and even how," so there is a need to "force" them to record, not allowing them to choose what should be recorded, thus preventing them from choosing whether to be tracked.
This situation (not making accurate tracking records) continues to occur, making it difficult to trace and explain who should be held accountable. A significant technical problem that needs to be addressed is ensuring that traceability and accountability are not optional but necessary. |
