Game Mechanics

When playing bomb pots, you should be aware that someone is likely connected to the flop. When each pot is fully contested, expect someone to have two pairs or better. You should never be surprised to see someone holding a strong hand in the bomb pot!

In wet or dynamic flops, expect the presence of strong flush draws, straight draws, or combination draws.

At the $2/$5 blind level, a typical bomb pot may require a $20 ante from each player. With nine players, the pot already contains $180 when the flop action begins. Chip stack ratios decrease significantly, and controlling the pot becomes challenging.

Because it's a bomb pot, you can't specify a pre-flop range for any opponent based on their position and action. This may leave you feeling lost when the betting action starts.

Nevertheless, players lacking bomb pot experience often overplay their top pairs or big pocket pairs.

Adjustments

To avoid getting caught in the bomb, you should stick to playing hands with at least two pairs. This becomes necessary before understanding how other players at the table handle such hands.

When dealt AA or KK in a bomb pot without hitting a hidden set on the flop, be prepared to check-fold. Don't overthink it. In wet or dynamic flops, the chances of someone hitting a hidden set, a visible set, or two pairs are too high. In dry flops, you'll find many cards that can beat your big pairs on the turn and river.

When aggressively betting with top or over pairs (common strong hands in most flop scenarios), savvy bomb pot players won't call with worse hands, and they won't fold good hands.

Don't always expect situations where you win huge pots. Instead, top up your chips before the bomb pot to ensure your good hands get paid the maximum.

Due to the absence of any pre-flop ranges, consider each opponent's playing tendencies. Is their play with big draws aggressive or passive? Do they overplay a single pair? Are they likely to check-raise with a strong hand? Do they make large bets with big hands in wet flops? Will they fold two pairs or better when the situation turns dangerous? Do they bluff in perilous situations?

I like to construct a range based on post-flop strength rather than pre-flop combinations. My range may include all two pairs, hidden sets, and flush draws instead of traditional pre-flop hands like 88+, AJ+, ATs+.

You need to give up semi-bluffing. The strength of a semi-bluff comes from fold equity, and assuming that a pot-sized bet will force everyone to fold frequently is naive.

Other Variations

In bomb pots, expect intense competition for large pots. However, sometimes everyone misses the flop, and a weak hand (or a bluff) wins a moderate pot. Patience is key, and the opportunity to have an extremely strong hand that can win all the chips will come.

For an even more exciting experience, some players enjoy playing "double board" bomb pots. In this variation, two sets of community cards are dealt simultaneously, and each player's best hand from each set wins half of the pot. After the initial ante is collected, the dealer reveals two sets of flops, followed by a betting round. Then each board receives a turn and river card with additional betting rounds.

When playing this game, if you hold the nuts on one board, the most profitable strategy might be to go all-in and force everyone to fold, winning both halves of the pot.

Conclusion

Bomb pots can be an excellent way to liven up a game, creating a larger pre-flop pot and keeping everyone in the game when the flop is dealt. Reading bomb pots involves understanding post-flop betting and how each player may play specific hand strengths in particular flop structures.
