Babar Azam Reflects on Securing the Top ODI Ranking Ahead of Australia

Pakistan's skipper, Babar Azam, attributes his team's ascent to the Number 1 spot in the ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings to unwavering hard work and discipline. A remarkable 3-0 series sweep against Afghanistan propelled Pakistan to the pinnacle of the Men's ODI Team Rankings, with 2725 points and 118 rating points, narrowly surpassing Australia.

Their path to this achievement was marked by outstanding performances. In the first ODI, Pakistan secured a commanding 142-run victory, underpinned by an exceptional bowling display. The second match delivered a nail-biting thriller, with Pakistan clinching a one-wicket win in the final over. The third game showcased their batting prowess on a challenging pitch, setting a formidable total, while consistent strikes from their bowlers secured a 59-run win.

Babar, in an interview with PCB following the third ODI, expressed his elation at reaching the top spot in the ODI team rankings, emphasizing it as a collective team effort. He said, "Whenever you achieve the No.1 spot, it gives you a lot of joy. This is the result of the entire team’s effort. We have been here before, but unfortunately, we lost that position after losing a game. But we’re back here by the grace of god. This is due to our hard work and performance."

Looking ahead to the upcoming Asia Cup, commencing on August 30th, Babar believes that the momentum gained from this series victory will offer a significant advantage. He acknowledged the challenge posed by Afghanistan, particularly their world-class spinners, and highlighted the importance of the momentum they've built.

"We are excited, and this series win will help us. This was not an easy series, even if some might assume otherwise. Afghanistan is a tough side, and their spinners are among the best in the world," Babar emphasized.
He concluded by expressing the team's enthusiasm for the Asia Cup and their readiness to compete in Multan. Pakistan will kick off their Asia Cup campaign against Nepal on August 30th.
