Are referees the same worldwide? This season, controversies surround English Premier League referees, but expertise beyond the Premier League isn't necessarily top-notch. Recently, La Liga referees faced controversial decisions, leading Barcelona, despite being unrelated to their match, to complain to the La Liga president about Real Madrid's alleged abuse of power and undue pressure on referees, resulting in wrong decisions.

The match in question was Real Madrid's 3-2 comeback against bottom-ranked Almería in La Liga. In the first half, Real Madrid trailed 0-2, but controversial decisions in the second half led to a 3-2 victory. The first goal had suspicions of a foul, and the second involved a potential handball by Vinícius Júnior. Post-match, Almería's coaches claimed the match was robbed, criticizing the referee's unfairness.

As Real Madrid's arch-rival, Barcelona, naturally, joined the criticism. Barcelona's president, Laporta, reportedly complained to the president of the Spanish Football Association. He believed Real Madrid, through their official TV channel, consistently pressured referees. Despite this, referees remained unresponsive, leaving Laporta puzzled. Concerned about the officiating in the Real Madrid vs. Almería match, Laporta urged Pedro Roche to investigate. He claimed Real Madrid's influence through their official TV channel hindered VAR's effectiveness.

After all, referees are human too. If that's the case, using AI in the future eliminates the risk of bias.

Why are there still mistakes with VAR? Isn't the idea that whenever there's a situation, it can be replayed until a fair result is achieved? Sigh, everything who  didn't want to happen has happened. Hopefully, they learn from this, and such mistakes really shouldn't be repeated.

Any team in the world has the right to criticize Real Madrid's refereeing issues, except for Barcelona. It is well-known that during Michel Platini's tenure as UEFA president, Barcelona received significant favoritism from referees on the pitch. At that time, Barcelona was famously considered the 'godfather's team,' winning numerous championships with ease. However, after Platini's arrest and the absence of the godfather's protection, Barcelona has not won another UEFA Champions League title.

Last year, Barcelona was once again involved in a major scandal, revealing payments made to a company between 2016-18. This company was owned by the vice president of the Spanish Referees Committee. The direct bribery reached the highest levels of the Referees Committee, highlighting how much Barcelona benefited from referee favoritism. It's ironic that such a shameless team still has the audacity to criticize other teams for receiving favorable treatment from referees.

Fortunately, fate intervened, and Barcelona ended up with a president like Bartomeu. He not only squandered Barcelona's wealth but also revealed that the club had been involved in referee bribery since his arrival in 2003. This gives an insight into how much the team likes to employ such off-field tactics.

The current referees often lack independent judgment, relying heavily on VAR. Additionally, some referees tend to make decisions based on their personal preferences. I used to think it was fairer before the introduction of VAR.

Referees are also human, and humans make mistakes. Of course, there are also intentionally biased referees!
