If a person secluded themselves on a deserted island for 33 years and was suddenly expelled back into human society, what would happen? An Italian man lived alone on the island of Budelli, located on the north coast of Sardinia, since 1989 and had never left the island. He lived a self-sufficient life for over 30 years. However, recently, due to the planned development and construction on Budelli Island, he was ordered to leave the island. Eventually, he reluctantly left the island where he had lived for 33 years.

This Italian man's name is Mauro Morandi. When he arrived on Budelli Island in 1989, he met the couple who were then the island's caretakers. Learning that they were retiring in two days, Mauro decided to take over their duties and became the new island caretaker. Although many island caretakers work as couples because the solitude is too much for one person to bear, Mauro, who was single, didn't mind. He naturally enjoyed solitude, and this job was a perfect fit for him.

For the next thirty years, Mauro never left the island. He used solar energy for electricity and rainwater for his water supply. In the summer, he grew vegetables, and in winter, he stayed indoors reading books. He even used plastic garbage collected from the beach to make a Christmas tree. He had two cats, a hen, and lived a very comfortable life. In the initial years, he avoided interacting with tourists who visited the island, but in recent years, he sporadically conversed with them and made friends.

Mauro hoped to spend his entire life on Budelli Island. However, harsh reality intervened. In 2013, the previous owner of Budelli Island encountered financial problems and had to auction it off. A New Zealand businessman named Michael Harte acquired the island. The Italian government opposed the sale, and a legal battle ensued for three years. In 2016, the court designated the island as part of the Maddalena Archipelago National Park. That same year, the park authorities opposed Mauro's continued residence on the island. However, Mauro refused to leave quietly. A petition against his eviction collected over 18,000 signatures, forcing local politicians to indefinitely postpone his eviction.

Ultimately, Mauro couldn't withstand the harassment from the authorities, so he chose to leave the island and move to a nearby island called La Maddalena, which has a population of 15,000 residents. He occasionally shares photos of his life on Budelli Island on social media. He admits to missing his life on Budelli Island but acknowledges that life is ever-changing. He has learned to adapt, and La Maddalena is now his new home, which is also good, although he realizes that the past cannot be relived.

It's not surprising that he had to return to human society since he's a human after all.
