For professional athletes, especially those in soccer, involvement in gambling, particularly sports betting, is a serious taboo. If caught, it can have a severe impact on their careers. In recent news, Manchester City expressed interest in West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta and was willing to pay €100 million for his transfer. However, a scandal involving Paqueta has put this potential deal on hold.

Manchester City was quick to target Lucas Paqueta after their key midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne, suffered an injury that would require several months of rest. The club had already negotiated personal terms with Paqueta, and the next step was to agree on the transfer fee with West Ham United. However, the situation took a turn when it was revealed that Paqueta was under investigation by FIFA and the English Football Association (FA) for alleged violations of gambling regulations.

Manchester City realized that something was amiss and immediately halted the transfer. According to professional rules, no player is allowed to engage in gambling, and if caught, they can face suspension depending on the circumstances. In the past, former Brentford forward Ivan Toney was banned for six months for gambling on matches in which he was involved. However, Toney's case involved betting on his own team winning, which played a role in his reduced suspension.

Lucas Paqueta's situation appears to be different. Reports suggest that suspicions about his gambling activities date back to a high-stakes bet placed during a Premier League match he participated in around March of this year. Bettors from Brazil allegedly placed significant wagers on Paqueta receiving a yellow card during that match. Subsequently, Paqueta did receive a yellow card for a foul on an opponent, intensifying the scrutiny on him.

As of now, Lucas Paqueta has not issued a formal response to the allegations. Brazilian media reports suggest that Paqueta is shocked by the situation and claims that the bets were not placed by him but by individuals closely associated with him. However, many questions remain unanswered, and Paqueta is currently under investigation in the UK. He is expected to appear at the FA headquarters next week to provide a statement regarding the incident. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Paqueta may face a lengthy suspension.

These kinds of incidents are indeed quite common, and they exist in every league. It's just a matter of whether they come to light or not. However, if this current situation is proven to be true, it could essentially ruin the player involved.

As soon as negative news like this surfaces, regardless of the final outcome, it can significantly impact a player's market value, potentially causing it to plummet.

With a price tag of €100 million, I believe that given Manchester City's rational approach, they are unlikely to take the risk on Lucas Paqueta if there are concerns about his conduct. There are plenty of talented players in the market, and spending €100 million on a player with potential issues may not be their preferred strategy.
