In a recent World Cup qualifier between Argentina and Ecuador, Ecuador's goalkeeper Galíndez remained stationary until the last moment when Messi scored a free-kick. Galíndez faced Messi's free-kick without making any attempt to save it, and some criticized him for doing so intentionally.
Regarding Messi's shot, Galíndez said, "The comments that I intentionally let the ball go are disgusting. Some say I don't love my country, but I wasn't born in Ecuador, I didn't have a choice. However, I have been living here for 12 years, I really like this country, and I respect Ecuador."
