MGM Resorts International recently faced a cybersecurity issue that significantly impacted its operations in the United States, prompting the shutdown of multiple systems and alerting authorities.
According to reports, the network issue initially caused the official MGM Resorts website and email systems to go offline, resulting in a crash of the booking system. Communication was limited to Gmail. Furthermore, there were widespread disruptions in slot machines and ATMs at MGM's Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos, and electronic keycards at some hotel entrances became non-functional. All transactions at the Bellagio Hotel had to be conducted manually, using cash.
MGM Resorts issued a statement acknowledging the cybersecurity problem and initiated an investigation with the assistance of cybersecurity experts. They promptly informed law enforcement to take action to safeguard their systems and data, including shutting down certain systems. The investigation is ongoing to determine the nature and scope of the incident.
Currently, MGM Resorts' public-facing website remains inaccessible, but their investor relations website appears unaffected. Their subsidiary in Macau has not been impacted at this time. In 2019, MGM Resorts experienced a data breach that exposed the information of over 10 million customers.
This incident highlights the escalating cybersecurity threats faced by hotel and casino giants. Regulatory bodies need to strengthen oversight, and businesses must prioritize enhancing their cybersecurity defenses, especially regarding the protection of customer privacy data. Industry experts hope MGM Resorts can swiftly identify the nature of the incident and implement effective measures to prevent data breaches and restore normal business operations." |
