Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard recently gave an interview on a podcast.
When asked if NBA championship teams can be considered world champions, Lillard said, "NBA champions are world champions because they (Team USA) lost in the World Cup, and everybody was like, 'See, we've been saying this.' But the best players in the world are in the NBA. The best players in that tournament are in the NBA. If you took the best teams in the NBA and had them play against all the other best leagues, they would kill them. If you took the best players in the NBA and put them in every league and had them play against the best teams in those leagues, they would kill them."
"All those national teams, they have NBA players on them. They come from their countries to the NBA. So in my eyes, the NBA is the world champion. If all your best players come and play in this league, then I don't understand where the controversy is. When Team USA assembles its best players, look at the Dream Team, even though foreign and European players have gotten a lot better now. Look at the 'Redeem Team' when they assembled their best players and they played all out, I think it would be the same thing. Even if another country did win, I still feel like if you win an NBA championship, you feel like a world champion. It's the best league in the world, and every country's best players come here to play." |
