All-rounders Fionn Hand and Gareth Delany are poised for a significant return to the Ireland cricket squad, marking an eagerly awaited comeback for the upcoming T20I series against India later this month. This duo's reentry has resulted in the omission of wicketkeeper-batter Neil Rock and pacer Graham Hume, marking the sole alterations to the Ireland squad that had participated in the T20 World Cup Europe Region Qualifier held in Scotland this past July.
Ireland's spirited campaign in Scotland proved fruitful as they secured a coveted spot in the highly anticipated T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in the West Indies and the USA next year. Alongside Scotland, Ireland clinched the top two positions in the qualifier, cementing their participation in the global cricketing spectacle. With the ultimate goal being the T20 World Cup, Andrew White, the selector for Ireland's men's national cricket team, affirmed their strategic focus on building a formidable squad.
White emphasized the pivotal role of the recent qualifiers in Scotland, framing it as the inaugural phase of Ireland's roadmap leading to the T20 World Cup. He revealed that a comprehensive plan is in place, involving around 15 T20 International matches prior to the World Cup, allowing them to address specific areas of improvement identified by the coaching staff.
Considering the limited time window between the present moment and the culmination of the domestic season in 2023, White underscored the urgency of maximizing every available opportunity. This involves providing exposure and invaluable experience to a pool of potential players who are prime contenders for a spot in the World Cup squad. He also highlighted the trickle-down effect of these opportunities, indicating that all 15 players named in the India series squad are likely to see action at some point.
Fionn Hand makes a return after an interval since the one-off Test against England at Lord's earlier in June. Gareth Delany, on the other hand, was previously part of the ODI squad that contested the 50-over World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe during June and July. Unfortunately, Delany had to bow out due to a broken wrist, a setback that did not mar the resolve of the Irish team. However, their ODI campaign in Zimbabwe yielded different results, as they narrowly missed out on securing a spot at the ODI World Cup in India later this year.
The forthcoming T20Is against cricketing heavyweight India are slated to unfold at the picturesque Malahide grounds on August 18, 20, and 23. The Ireland squad selected for the India T20I series, captained by Paul Stirling, reflects the team's determination to make their mark on the international stage. Alongside Stirling, the squad comprises Andrew Balbirnie, Mark Adair, Ross Adair, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Josh Little, Barry McCarthy, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker as the wicketkeeper, Theo van Woerkom, Ben White, and Craig Young. Gareth Delany and Fionn Hand's inclusion adds renewed vigor and versatility to the team's composition, aiming to propel Ireland to new heights in the T20I series.
