Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stated that central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) have not evolved in the way he had hoped. He was once more optimistic about CBDCs, but now he believes that most of them have become the "frontend" for traditional banking systems. Buterin suggests that CBDCs may not be private digital assets; instead, he believes that they will allow governments and corporations to monitor the financial transactions of those who use them.
