Indian cricket team has seen two famous captains from the eastern part of India, who have successfully led the international team to achieve new heights. However, there is always a debate on who was the best of the two. Let’s check out.

In my opinion, I would rate Sourav Ganguly ahead of MS Dhoni.

As someone who has been watching cricket since the late 90s, Sourav led a relatively new team and played in the finals of the 2003 World Cup. This was some achievement considering the team was in a bad position about 2 years before the world cup. Sourav defined aggression and ensured to put up a tooth-and-nail fight, an attitude that’s usually seen amongst the best captains of the game.

I would vouch that MS Dhoni is slightly ahead of Sourav Ganguly.

Like Sourav, MS Dhoni took things to himself and led a young Indian team to win the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007. This is a stellar record considering most of the players in the squad were in-experienced and Dhoni, alongside the likes of Gambhir, Yuvraj, and Harbhajan were amongst the veterans. The team did exceptionally well given the competition they faced from top teams. This and many more instances of India winning top ICC tournaments became a habit with MS sitting as the beacon of success.

Both are exceptional in their own ways.

While Sourav and MS were identical in their roles as Indian captains, their approach to the game was polar opposite. Sourav redefined aggression and never-say-die-attitude in the team, while MS believed in player skills and had a nerve of steel. With both having successful wins and trophies, it would be unfair to compare one another amongst who is the best of the lot.
