Richard Metcalfe, the Head of Regulatory Affairs at the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), has provided six recommendations regarding regulatory agencies and cryptocurrency trading to Finextra. He stated that if you don't do these things, using the term "exchange" can be misleading. Metcalfe mentioned that they have been closely monitoring the cryptocurrency market, and they've realized early on that, while cryptocurrencies present some interesting challenges, the recurring issue is doubt. Metcalfe elaborated that many participants in the cryptocurrency space might mistakenly assume that all the checks and balances present when trading stocks in properly regulated markets or trading in any other established financial asset will be in place. They may think that what you get in a predefined environment is a given, but it's not necessarily the case. Metcalfe recommended considering this from a public policy perspective to protect investors and market integrity. |
