"On September 26th, American media reported that Golden State Warriors General Manager Bob Myers discussed the contract extensions of Klay Thompson and Steve Kerr at today's press conference. Myers stated, ""Both parties intend to renew their contracts and ensure they can stay in the Bay Area, but at this stage, there is no specific timeline.""
Reporter Slater from The Mercury News followed up, stating that under the new labor agreement, renewing Thompson's contract with the Warriors would become more complex. According to informed sources, there have been no formal offers or negotiations between the Warriors and Thompson, so the contract amount remains undetermined. It's apparent that both sides are not in a rush to complete the extension and theoretically, it could be done during the season. What is certain is that the Warriors are strongly committed to renewing Thompson, and he will remain in the Bay Area indefinitely.
Slater also revealed that the Warriors traded for Chris Paul this summer to avoid the restrictions of the second luxury tax line for the 24-25 season. Teams above the second luxury tax line cannot use the mini mid-level exception or acquire buyout players during the season, and their draft picks will also be frozen.
Additionally, trading away Paul signifies the Warriors' desire to keep Thompson. Since Paul's salary for the 24-25 season (30 million USD) is not fully guaranteed, theoretically, the Warriors could offer Thompson a contract extension worth over 42 million USD per year. However, considering Thompson's age and injury history, both parties are likely to negotiate a lower extension offer to provide the Warriors with more flexibility. Thompson has one year remaining on his current contract and will become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024.
