"To increase tax revenue for social welfare programs, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsuthin has expressed support for expanding legal gambling, especially in the realm of sports betting. In his view, utilizing substantial funds to assist those in need, such as the elderly, disabled individuals, and impoverished children, would benefit society.

Currently, Thailand allows gambling on events like cockfighting and bullfighting, but many other forms of gambling, including sports betting, remain prohibited. The Deputy Prime Minister believes that legalizing and taxing certain activities like sports betting could be advantageous for both the government and the people.

During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, around 1,700 people in Thailand were imprisoned for gambling-related offenses. The government has taken measures to combat online gambling. According to the Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Prasert Chantararuangthong, 4,400 gambling websites have been shut down this year, and legal actions have been taken against 6,000 cases of online gambling.

Thepsuthin's idea is to harness the revenue potential of gambling to assist the most vulnerable segments of the population, which could be beneficial for both the government and those in need of assistance.

I estimate it's also for the purpose of making money, as gambling can be quite profitable, after all.

Expanding it would indeed allow for better revenue collection. Let's hope that Thailand can also maintain peace and stability.
