October 3rd report - According to AFP, the Australian Open, which takes place annually in Melbourne, will now start a day earlier on a Sunday.
Craig Tiley, the chairman of the Australian Open, stated, 'We've heard feedback from players and fans, and we're pleased to find ways to minimize the probability of playing late-night matches.'
He said, 'Adding an extra day to the schedule will address this issue, benefiting both fans and players.'
The Australian Open did not specifically mention the incident in January when Andy Murray stayed up late to play. The match at that time, which lasted five sets, took 5 hours and 45 minutes, concluding at 4:05 a.m. as Murray defeated Australian opponent Thanasi Kokkinakis. He had questioned, 'Why are we playing at 3 a.m.?' after the match.
He stated, 'This isn't good for the umpires or the tournament staff. I don't think the fans find it great either. It's not good for the players.'
The Australian Open organizers mentioned that the data shows that matches are currently running longer.
The 2024 Australian Open will start on January 14th and conclude on January 28th. |
