The world is full of wonders, and every time we encounter something new, it's hard not to be amazed. For example, can you imagine someone swimming for 20 minutes every day to get to work, crossing from Asia to Europe, just to avoid the traffic during rush hours? Well, in fact, there is such a person!
The remarkable individual I'd like to introduce today is named Hamit Sajin, a pastry chef from Turkey. He lives on the eastern side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul and works on the western side. Initially, he used to commute to work by car, crossing the Bosphorus on the Eurasia Bridge. However, the bridge was often heavily congested during rush hours, making his daily commute a 50-minute ordeal.
Frustrated by the long daily commute, Sajin decided to give up driving and started swimming across the Bosphorus to get to work. Swimming would take him only 20 minutes to reach his destination, significantly faster than driving, and it also allowed him to stay in good shape. After some time, his decision influenced his friends, and now they swim together to work every day. One of them takes turns driving and transports their belongings and clothing to the other side.
However, swimming in the Bosphorus has its risks. It's one of the busiest waterways globally, marking the division between Europe and Asia. They need to be cautious of large ships to avoid accidents. So, they check the ferry schedules in advance to ensure their safety.
Sajin has mentioned in interviews that he thoroughly enjoys this way of life. While his family, especially his two daughters, initially opposed the idea, they eventually changed their minds. Now, they proudly tell people that their father is the man who swims across the Bosphorus every day. |
