"Non-upgradeable scaling refers to achieving specific types of scalability without making changes to the existing Bitcoin technical infrastructure, relying solely on the existing features of Bitcoin.
Representative technologies include RGB and Bitcoin Script. RGB is an extensible and privacy-friendly smart contract system that can run directly on the Lightning Network. However, all the data it generates exists off the Bitcoin main chain (off-chain), meaning the security of the entire ledger cannot rely on the security of the Bitcoin main network.
It's achieved using Bitcoin Script to add additional data and assign a unique serial number to each smallest unit of Bitcoin, Satoshis (Sats). This method can only make minor improvements to Bitcoin's scalability. Currently, there's a hype surrounding Bitcoin NFTs and BRC-20 tokens, but the sustainability of their value remains to be seen.
From the perspective of the Bitcoin main network, the data attached by various Scripts is meaningless gibberish, leading to the waste of Bitcoin block space and transaction congestion. This has caused strong dissatisfaction among some members of the Bitcoin community.
In summary, non-upgradeable scaling solutions are decentralized and do not require overall consensus from the Bitcoin community in terms of implementation difficulty. However, RGB does not rely on the consensus security of the Bitcoin main network, and scalability through scripts for Bitcoin transactions is very limited." |
