I worked in Singapore for a period of time, and the public safety there has always been excellent. Singapore is a country that strictly prohibits gambling. However, recently, the Singaporean Gambling Control Act has clarified that social gambling among family and friends in a face-to-face setting at home is not illegal. After all, at the gambling table, we are all friends, hehe!
Yesterday, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, K. Shanmugam, read the Singapore Gambling Control Act and Gambling Control (Amendment) Act in Parliament. According to reports from the new media, the Gambling Control Act explicitly states that social gambling among family and friends in a home setting is not illegal. However, due to enforcement restrictions, online social gambling will continue to be prohibited, and the police will crack down severely on any criminal organizations taking advantage of this opportunity to engage in illegal gambling activities.
The Act also seeks to amend the definition of gambling to cover existing and emerging gambling products. For example, betting is no longer limited to horse racing and sports events but also includes the outcomes of any competitions and activities. The Ministry of Home Affairs conducted a public consultation on the gambling law last year. This time, it plans to modify some provisions through the Gambling Control Act to better address new trends, update relevant charges and penalties. The Ministry of Home Affairs intends to establish the Gambling Regulatory Authority in the middle of this year to oversee all gambling activities uniformly. The Ministry of Home Affairs notes that authorities will propose amendments to the Casino Control (Amendment) Act in the future to enhance the efficiency of casino regulation and ensure that casino regulations keep pace with the times. |
