As is well known, Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country that has historically opposed gambling. The idea of opening casinos in Thailand was first proposed in December, despite facing opposition from several grassroots organizations. However, the plan has been implemented. Reports from Bangkok state that Thailand is legalizing casinos, hoping to attract more foreign tourists.

Bangkok (Asian News) - In December of last year, the Thai government announced the formation of a 60-member committee to study plans for establishing casinos in various locations nationwide. Last week, the government gazette officially announced this decision. Although the Thai government has taken action, establishing casinos remains controversial. Many business people see them as a means of economic recovery and attracting foreign tourists. However, opposition from religious and moral considerations, prevalent in this predominantly Buddhist country, has hindered government progress. Many civil society groups oppose gambling, citing potential negative impacts on nearby communities.

Cities where casinos are proposed to be operated include Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the north, Udon Thani and Ubon Ratchathani in the northeast, and Pattaya and Chonburi in the east. The committee, chaired by Deputy Transport Minister Atirat Ratanasate, has submitted a cost-benefit analysis of the economic, employment, and image impacts of casinos to the country within 90 days. Currently, except for the national lottery and horse racing, other forms of gambling are illegal in Thailand. Casinos have been excluded in the past due to concerns about morality, as well as the difficulty of supervision and taxation. If previous measures have failed, the recent initiative to open casinos appears more favorable. Thailand's domestic situation, the international environment, and the interests of potential investors may contribute to its success.

For Thailand, in this situation of national debt, progress in opening up the tourism industry has been slow. Opening up the gambling industry may expedite the process. The saying "You haven't been to America if you haven't been to Las Vegas" may evolve into "You haven't experienced Southeast Asian casinos if you haven't been to Thailand."

In this context, it is indeed quite bold.

This is an era centered around the economy; once the economy prospers, other aspects naturally fall into place.

Bangkok, Thailand, as a city highly developed in tourism and the adult entertainment industry, the eventual trend of opening up the gambling industry is a possibility.
