"Everyone knows that the two biggest giants in the metaverse are definitely Meta (formerly Facebook) and Apple. Apple is concerned that Meta will need thousands of new employees to build the metaverse. To preemptively retain key talents and prevent them from being poached by Meta, Apple is offering ""unusually significant bonuses"" to some engineers, making efforts to retain talents and avoid employee defection to tech competitors.
Over the past few months, Apple has realized that Meta has poached about 100 engineers. While Apple has also poached key members from Meta, in order to stop the talent drain and compete with rivals, Apple has proposed a series of incentive measures to retain employees. Currently, about 20% of eligible department engineers have received their bonuses; however, the bonus details are required to be kept anonymous as it is a confidential plan. Some engineers who have not received the bonuses are also dissatisfied after learning about it, claiming that the company was too hasty in the selection process. Meanwhile, amid the pandemic, Apple continues to encourage employees to return to the office.
However, Apple's actions have caused discontent among employees. In addition to the disruption in engineering progress due to poaching, with the impact of the Omicron variant, most employees are likely to continue working from home in the future. Still, hardware engineers are hit the hardest, as Apple announced its desire for regular employees to enter the office three days a week, while hardware engineers are required to be in the office four to five days a week. Apple is also creating products for the metaverse, and it recently poached key employees from Meta in a talent competition. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Meta recruited nearly 100 engineers from Apple, artificial intelligence, and hardware and software engineering departments within a few months. Meta is using ""substantial salary increases as bait, hoping to focus on hardware and the so-called metaverse.""
