The metaverse, apart from the two giants Meta and Apple, is now being contested by Google as well! According to two informed sources, Google is developing an augmented reality (AR) project called 'Project Iris,' expected to debut around 2024! Looking forward to it~

It is reported that Google's device, like the upcoming headsets from Meta and Apple, will use external tracking cameras. Project Iris will be equipped with a custom Google processor and run on the Android operating system. The device is expected to supplement its computing power by rendering cloud computing technology in remote data centers and then transmitting it to the headset. Early prototype products in development can reportedly operate independently without the need for an external power source. Additionally, the Pixel team is involved in the planned hardware design, but it's still unclear whether the device will use the Pixel brand. Project Iris is reportedly led by a core team of 300 people, headed by Google Vice President Clay Bavor.

Bavor has been overseeing the development of AR and VR technologies at Google and is also in charge of Project Starline. Google plans to hire several hundred more people for planning, and Bavor reports directly to CEO Sundar Pichai on progress. However, the project seems to be in its early stages, and the product's strategic blueprint is yet to be finalized, so there may be variables regarding its expected launch in 2024. According to foreign media reports, Google aims to release Iris and Starline before 2024. Recently, the company also hired Paul Greco, the Chief Technology Officer of Magic Leap, to join the team. Currently, Starline has collaborated with several Fortune 500 companies to pilot remote meeting programs. In the future, Google also hopes to deploy Starline internally as part of the hybrid work model after the pandemic.

On the other hand, Meta, since changing its company name in October last year, has actively entered the metaverse and VR technology development. Recently, Meta shared advancements in haptic gloves from the VR technology company Reality Labs, indicating that haptic feedback will be introduced into the metaverse through this product. However, Meta also mentioned that this haptic glove product will not be available soon. It's good news for distant relationships, allowing parents on overseas business trips to touch their children!
